FORWARDING A LEATHER BINDING – Saturday 20th May

This workshop will include sewing techniques, endpaper construction and attachment, board preparation, rounding and backing, spine lining and end-band sewing, board attachment and hollow back construction.

Prior to attending the workshop, participants will need to prepare an A5 sized book, between 20 and 30mm thick, which has been re-sewn on either three 10mm wide tapes or three recessed cords.

Sufficient tape or cord, approximately 50mm long, should be left at the front and back of the book for use when attaching the boards.

A coloured or marble paper for endpapers will also be required, sheet size 50 x 70cms, 90gsm in weight.

PARING AND COVERING IN LEATHER – Saturday 10th June

This workshop will cover types of leather used, the use of paring knives / spokeshaves / paring machines; covering styles and techniques used for traditional and modern binding styles, corner mitring, and trimming out and putting down of endpapers. Participants should bring their own paring tools, left and right handed paring knives are available from J Hewit & Sons.

FINISHING IN FOIL – Saturday 24th June

This workshop will include type sizes and letter spacing, the use of hand letters, type holders decorative / pallets / rolls; blind tooling and tooling with foils, use of a foil blocking machine and a heated stylus.

Participants will be encouraged to practice on dummy book spines before finishing their own bindings.

PROTECTIVE BOOK BOXES – Saturday 15th July

This workshop will include the use of a materials measuring kit, accurate measuring of the book to be contained within the box, the methods of construction and covering of both a slipcase and a drop back box.

Examples of other protective book containers will be shown.

Participants are to provide two books of A5 size: one to be contained in the slipcase, the other in the drop back box.
